Posted by Mark Hedengren on

Recently I read Creativity Inc. by Ed Catmull the founder/CEO of Pixar. Catmull is from Salt Lake City got all of his degrees including a PhD at the University of Utah. In fact graduates U of U Computer Science program in the 70s are responsible for Atari, Silicon Graphics, Pixar, and Adobe. Looking Back on the Film to Digital Revolution

Posted by Mark Hedengren on

It’s been almost 10 years since the RED ONE in 2007 was released and changed filmmaking forever so I think it’s a good time to look at what has happened.            I feel the core difference between the digital era and the film era is that with much less money you can get the same tools that $100 million productions use.  35mm color film costs about $1000 for every 10 minutes once you factor in processing etc. Now you can rent a RED Dragon (the same camera that shotThe Hobbit 1, 2 and 3 and many other films) for $395 a...

I like photography books. I like them a lot. I don’t think this makes me unique in the world of people in photography. With a large high-resolution monitor and a speedy computer what would take six hours can take only four. That added up over the years is a big time savings. Honestly this love of speed comes from the months I spent in a darkroom. When you are making fiber based black and white prints...

BUSINESS AND ART- THE FOUR P’S OF BUSINESS

Posted by Mark Hedengren on

In the art world, I understand business is a bad word. I don’t believe this is without cause. There is more to life than making money. If I wanted to make money, I would have become a dentist. But since I believe there is more to life than money, I’m in the arts.                 At the same time I don’t have a problem with what is normally termed “business skills”; they are nothing more than a way of breaking down and organizing a problem to get something done. In that case that is what art is all about. Even a...
